SportsCenter is the pinnacle of sports broadcasting. Every single sports journalist dreams of, one day, becoming an anchor on the show. And for fans, it’s the #1 destination to catch the latest news and highlights for every major sport across the globe. (Heck, I used to watch it religiously.)
But if it’s THAT hyper competitive, how do you actually become an anchor for them? How do you do even GET THEM to notice you?
I wanted to find out so I invited Darren Haynes, an anchor on ESPN’s SportsCenter, to come on the show. And chatting with him, I learned so much about his career journey — one of the biggest takeaways (for me) was that it’s not as much “luck” as you would think.
Every move was calculated. Every sacrifice was directed toward his dream. Every thought process helped push him forward, not pull him back.
I’m thrilled to share this interview with you. But I want you to pay attention and avoid distractions — I believe it is THAT important and beneficial. (It also ain’t easy to lockdown a podcast with a SportsCenter anchor, regardless if your name is “Anthony Yeung,” lolz.)
In the next 30 minutes, you’ll learn…
- How Darren thought about progressing through his career, even when he was working at small TV markets (and making less money than someone at Taco Bell)
- The RIGHT way to network in your industry without annoying people
- How you should think about making decisions and sacrifices to propel your journey (Hint: It’s not easy, but it’s necessary)
- Why you should reset your attitude from short-term events to long-term goals
- How to overcome your self-doubt by re-thinking your career journey with a great analogy we can ALL resonate with
- And, as always, listen the one thing you can do RIGHT NOW to take the first step towards become the best
P.S. Darren’s 3-year-old daughter makes an adorable appearance.
