“You better get used to this,” I thought, “if you really want to be here.”
A few feet in front of me, NFL stars like Clay Matthews, Taylor Mays, and C.J. Spiller sprinted, leapt, and blasted through their morning drills. I stood there – head up, chest tall, and shoulders pulled back – hoping to look like I belonged. Inside, however, I felt like a kid, starstruck, admiring the dudes I watch on Sundays.
I was uncomfortable as hell. And that’s exactly what I wanted.
Huh?
I admit it — I’m weird. I love doing uncomfortable things to get accustomed to challenges. Whether that’s observing professional athletes, networking with superstar strength coaches, bothering strangers, or being homeless, I live for that burning sensation in your cheeks. I still get nervous when I click the “Send” button on important emails or shake the hands of elite strength coaches. And thinking back to that Wednesday afternoon, it was a powerful reminder:
If you want to work with the best, you better get used to it.
Be willing to be uncomfortable. Be comfortable being uncomfortable. It may get tough, but it’s a small price to pay for living a dream.
